Florida has no mountains, so these grounds start in the air: nearly 13,500 feet in the door of a DeLand jump plane, then a sunrise balloon over the lakes, a 450-foot swing and a 400-foot wheel on International Drive, ziplines over flooded quarries at Ocala and over Gatorland's marsh – and at zero, the springs, where in winter the manatees come to you.

The door opens at nearly 13,500 feet and for about sixty seconds Florida is a flat green map with lakes cut into it: the St. Johns, the coast, and on clear days both of them at once.
Sold direct, at no network. Neither GetYourGuide nor Viator lists a tandem jump in Central Florida – DeLand, an hour north-east of Orlando, is one of the busiest drop zones in the world and sells its own slots. You meet an hour before sunrise near Championsgate, the burner lights the dark, and at a thousand feet the lakes turn to mirrors while the parks below are still empty.

The seats rise up the mast until International Drive is a strip of light, then the arms swing out and you spin at forty-five miles an hour with nothing but a chain and a bar between you and the parking lots.
Twelve dollars for the highest swing on this site. The ride lasts a few minutes and the Viator ticket costs about what the gate does; go after dark, when the mast is lit and the parks have closed.

The capsule is air-conditioned and turns so slowly you barely feel it; at the top the whole of International Drive lies below you, and on the horizon the fireworks of three theme parks.

Gatorland's towers stand up to 65 feet over the breeding marsh, and the lines run straight across it: below you, a few hundred alligators that have seen this before and do not look up.

In winter the manatees crowd into Kings Bay because the springs stay warm; you drift above them in a clear-hulled kayak, or slip in with a snorkel and let a half-ton animal decide how close it comes.
Winter is the point. The tours run all year, but the crowds of manatees come with the cold; in summer you may see a handful. Viator's clear-kayak tour has four times the reviews of the GetYourGuide equivalent, so it goes first.

The other spring, an hour north of Orlando: glass-bottom boats have run here since the 1870s, and now you paddle the same water in a transparent kayak – manatees in winter, and the rhesus monkeys that escaped a 1930s jungle-cruise attraction in the trees.
Half an hour south of the parks the lakes turn to sawgrass; the airboats run flat out across it and stop for alligators. The Wild Florida ticket has the most reviews, the ninety-minute Viator tour the smaller boats.
A vertical wind tunnel on International Drive: two flights of about a minute each, the position of a real freefall, no altitude at all. The stop for anyone who wants to know what the DeLand jump feels like before booking it.
West of Orlando the flat land folds into sand hills and orange groves; the single-seat ATV tours run an hour through the pines and the mud on a private forest tract.
A spring-fed river so clear you snorkel it like a reef: the Rainbow rises at Dunnellon, an hour north of Orlando, and the tours drift down it for a morning.

Not through GetYourGuide or Viator – neither lists one in Central Florida. Skydive DeLand, about an hour north-east of Orlando, sells its tandems direct from nearly 13,500 feet for $237; Skydive City at Zephyrhills near Tampa charges $225, and $149 on Tuesdays. Both quote about 60 seconds of freefall.
From November to March, when the Gulf cools and the animals crowd into the warm springs of Kings Bay. Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1983 for the Florida manatee and protects Three Sisters Springs, the last undeveloped spring in the bay. Summer tours run too, but with far fewer animals.
The StarFlyer: its mast stands 450 feet, the wheel 400. They are neighbours on International Drive, and the difference in feeling is bigger than the fifty feet – the wheel is a slow, air-conditioned capsule, the swing spins at up to 45 mph on a chain.
At The Canyons near Ocala, an hour and a half north of Orlando, where the lines cross flooded limestone quarries up to 155 feet up – the park sells direct. Closer to the parks, Gatorland's Screamin' Gator Zip Line runs 1,200 feet over the alligator marsh from towers up to 65 feet and is the one you can book on GetYourGuide.
Yes, at sunrise: Bob's Balloons meets near Championsgate and climbs to about 1,000 feet for $325 per person, about three hours door to door, ages five and up. Book direct – the Viator listing was inactive when we checked.
