Marrakech sits between two deserts and a four-thousand-metre mountain range, and everything here starts before sunrise. A balloon takes you a kilometre up over the hills before the heat begins; a pickup grinds up to a village at 1,200 metres where a wing is already laid out; a gorge two hours east drops a river 110 metres in three steps; and on the stone desert at Agafay the quads run until the light goes. The burner fires in the dark, the ground lets go without a sound, and by the time the sun clears the horizon you are a thousand metres over the Jbilet with the entire Atlas range standing white on the skyline.
Read the price twice. Some listings show a deposit rather than the full fare – the cheapest headline numbers here are not what you pay at the end. Private baskets cost several times the shared ones, and the big balloons take twenty people.

A dirt road climbs to a ridge above Aguergour, the wing fills, and three steps later the olive terraces are a long way down. The valley of Moulay Brahim opens up and you have eight hundred metres to lose.
Half the day is the drive. The flight is twenty minutes; the tours run four to six hours because Aguergour is an hour of mountain road from the city. There is no formal landing field – pilots put down on the flat ground below the village, which is why the height figures vary between operators.

You come over the lip of the plateau and the river simply disappears: 110 metres down in three steps, spray drifting across the path, Barbary macaques in the olive trees, and small boats circling in the pool at the bottom.
No ropes here – you walk it. Nobody sells a rappel or a zip at Ouzoud; the tours are a path down beside the falls, a boat under the spray and lunch above. It is a twelve-hour day for a two-hour visit, and it is still the second most-booked thing in these grounds.

The Agafay is not sand but grey stone hills, and that is what makes the quads fast: hard ground, dry riverbeds, a camel line waiting at the top of the rise and a camp with drums and lamps once the sun is gone.

Terres d'Amanar above Tahanaout runs four cables, the longest 430 metres, on a 120-hectare site at about 1,200 metres. As everywhere else we have checked, the operator publishes the lengths and not the height above the ground – which is why the ziplines are here and not in the fall.
Same desert, four wheels and a seatbelt. The buggies cost roughly double a quad and are the better choice for anyone who does not fancy steering with their shoulders.
The short version of the Atlas: a river valley with seven small waterfalls at Setti Fatma, Berber villages and lunch by the water. Half the price of Ouzoud and half the driving.

At Aguergour in the High Atlas, about an hour from the city. Operators take off at around 1,200 metres and quote 800 to 1,200 metres of height for the tandem flight, which lasts ten to twenty-five minutes; pilots land on flat ground below the village because there is no official landing field. Prices run €69–98 and most tours fill the rest of the day with a quad ride or lunch.
It is 150 kilometres each way from Marrakech, so budget eleven to twelve hours for about two at the falls – and nearly 40,000 people have reviewed the main tour, so plenty think it is worth it. The river drops 110 metres in three steps, the longest of them 75 metres, and small boats take you under the spray at the bottom.
