Colorado stacks its thrills along one line of mountains: a cog railway that has been grinding to a 14,115-foot summit since 1891, a drop zone north of Denver, a bridge that hangs 955 feet over the Arkansas River with a skycoaster and a zipline beside it, a swing that flings you out over a 1,300-foot canyon at Glenwood, and the river itself – the most rafted in the United States, Class 4 through the gorge. The train leaves Manitou Springs at a walking pace and the grade goes to one in four. Trees shrink, then stop. At the top the air has a third less oxygen than at the sea, the view is four states, and the song was written up here.
The cog railway is sold by the railway. GetYourGuide has no Cog ticket – the listings here drive the toll road to the same summit by jeep. Longmont's airfield sits on the seam: to the west the Front Range stands up like a wall, to the east Kansas goes on forever. Twelve and a half thousand feet up, that seam is the whole view, and then you are falling into it.

The park sits on top of Iron Mountain, and the swing is bolted to the edge of it. It arcs you out over the rim with nothing under your feet but 1,300 feet of canyon and the Colorado River, then back, then out again.
The park sells its own passes. Glenwood Caverns is not on GetYourGuide – around 5,400 people a month search for the park, and you buy the day pass at the gondola. It is two and a half hours west of Denver on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon; the rafting on that stretch is bookable and listed at the bottom of the fall.

They winch you up a 100-foot tower on the very edge of the gorge, face down. You pull the cord yourself. The first swing takes you out past the rim, 1,200 feet above the river, with the bridge off to one side.
Entry is on GetYourGuide, the rides are at the park. The $35 ticket gets you the bridge, the gondola and the park; Skycoaster and Cloudscraper are add-ons bought on site and weather-dependent – the gorge funnels wind. The 9- and 11-line zipline tours listed further down are a different company on the rim, not the Cloudscraper.

Twelve hundred and ninety-two wooden planks, and between them, gaps. Through the gaps, 955 feet of granite and a river the width of a shoelace. The bridge sways in wind, which is most of the time, and cars used to drive across it.
Two ways to see it: from the deck or from the bottom. The park ticket puts you on the planks; the Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs the floor of the gorge directly beneath the bridge, the most-booked thing in Cañon City with over 600 reviews. Do the train in the afternoon light and the bridge in the morning before the wind.

Sunshine Falls, Sledgehammer, Boateater – the Royal Gorge rapids have names because they earn them, run in a granite slot 1,250 feet deep with the bridge a thread overhead. Browns Canyon is the friendly version.
Pick the section by who is in the boat. Royal Gorge is Class 4 and adults; Browns Canyon takes families with teenagers; Clear Creek's classic run takes seven-year-olds and is the closest whitewater to Denver. A separate company runs 9- and 11-line zipline courses on the Royal Gorge rim – the 11-line sells itself as the fastest in North America – and Denver has a six-line course in the foothills and another at Idaho Springs. None publishes a height above the ground, so they stay outside the fall.

955 feet – 291 metres – above the Arkansas River, by Wikipedia's figure, on a deck 1,260 feet long and 18 feet wide made of 1,292 wooden planks. It opened on December 8, 1929, was the highest bridge in the world until 2001 and is still the highest in the United States. The gorge beneath is up to 1,250 feet deep and only 50 feet wide at the bottom.
A giant swing on the rim of the Royal Gorge: you are winched up a 100-foot tower, release yourself and swing out over the canyon at up to 50 mph, 1,200 feet above the river. It has run since 2003. It is bought at the park on top of the entry ticket (about $35 on GetYourGuide) and it closes in high wind, which the gorge produces often.
Yes – Colorado's largest drop zone is Mile-Hi Skydiving at Longmont, 35 miles north of Denver, jumping tandems from 12,500 feet with higher altitudes up to 18,000 feet above sea level on offer, 18 years and 250 pounds maximum. Remember Longmont itself is at about 5,000 feet, so the freefall is shorter than the number suggests. It is not on GetYourGuide; book direct.
By the crew. The Royal Gorge is Class 4–5 – Sunshine Falls, Sledgehammer, Boateater – for adults, about $126 for a half day. Browns Canyon near Buena Vista is Class 3–4 and takes families, about $97. Clear Creek at Idaho Springs is 30 miles west of Denver, Class 2–3 on the classic run from age seven, about $87. The Arkansas is the most rafted river in the United States; the season is mid-May to August.

GetYourGuide's alternative is a jeep up the 19-mile toll road to the same summit, about $140 to $169.
This ground is a line down the Front Range. From Denver: the Longmont drop zone 35 miles north, Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak an hour and a half south, Cañon City and the Royal Gorge about two hours, Glenwood Springs two and a half hours west on I-70. Plan two bases – Denver or Colorado Springs for the south, and a night in Glenwood if you want the swing.
