Parasailing is the gentlest way up on these grounds – you sit in a harness, the boat does the work, and you never have to get wet. Its rules are unusual: the weight limit is a combined figure for everyone under the canopy, and the minimum age is five. Its risk is unusual too. The US National Transportation Safety Board investigated the sport in 2014 and found that almost every serious accident had the same cause: a towline that parted in wind the boat should not have been out in.
Operators' own limits on 2 grounds
The number that matters is the combined weight. A parasail canopy and its flight bar are rated for a total load – 450 lb (about 205 kg) is the common figure – so two or three people fly together as long as they add up to less. Per-person caps of about 250 lb exist because the harness has to fit. There is also a minimum, and it moves with the wind: on a calm day a light single passenger cannot generate enough lift, so operators pair children with an adult or wait for more breeze.
Age starts at five almost everywhere; children under 18 fly with an adult in the same harness bar. You do not need to swim – take-off and landing are from the boat deck – and the captain decides the day: light rain flies, lightning and gusty wind do not.

A flight costs $75–100 per person on Waikiki and Biscayne Bay for 6–10 minutes at 300–500 ft, inside an hour-long boat trip. Photos and the “dip” are extras; a marina credit rather than a refund is the usual weather policy.

Parasailing is the one activity here where the official safety picture is uncomfortable. The NTSB's 2014 special investigation found 3 to 5 million rides a year in the US with no federal training, certification, equipment inspection or weather rule for operators – and concluded that “due to the nature of parasailing, accidents usually result in either serious injury or death”. The count is small but the pattern is sharp: in Florida, six deaths and 18 injuries in 19 accidents over 2001–2012; in the Coast Guard's 2002–2009 review, towline failures accounted for over half of the injuries and all three deaths, with the boat's winch failing in 11 cases. The towline parts when the boat is out in wind it should not be in. Florida has since legislated wind and weather limits. For you that means one question before you book: does the operator publish its wind cut-off and cancel on gusty days? The two on our grounds say they do.
