Everyone recognises the cliffs before the guide says the name. Seven tandem lines and two suspension bridges cross the valley where the dinosaurs ran; the UTVs take the film crews' tracks, the horses go slower.

There is no path, only the old tramway: 1,048 wooden ties climbing the cone at an angle that makes you use your hands, a trestle with nothing under the ties, and at the top the whole south shore. Locals run it before work.

Free, and the hardest 0.42 miles on the island. Nothing to book – park at Koko Head District Park in Hawaii Kai, 20 minutes from Waikiki, and start. Before eight in the morning or after four; there is no shade and the ties are steepest at the top. Stairway to Heaven, the other famous stair, is closed and illegal.

The trail starts on the crater floor and climbs the inside wall: switchbacks, a tunnel, 99 steps, another tunnel, a spiral up through a bunker. Then the rim, and Waikiki laid out below exactly like the postcard.

    Can you skydive on Oahu?

    Yes – from Dillingham (Kawaihapai) Airfield on the North Shore, an hour from Waikiki, where Skydive Hawaii sells tandems from 14,000 feet and a 20,000-foot HALO jump it calls the highest tandem in Hawaii, from about $198 online, 18 and over, 250 pounds maximum. It is not on GetYourGuide or any platform we checked on Sept 25, 2026; book with the drop zone.

    Is Kualoa Ranch worth it, and which tour?

    It is the most-searched place on Oahu – 201,000 searches a month – and the valley really is the one from Jurassic Park. For the thrill, the Jurassic Valley zipline (seven tandem lines up to 1,320 feet, two suspension bridges, about $194 on GetYourGuide) or the guided UTV (about $162); for the cheap look, the open-air jungle expedition at about $63 with over 1,300 reviews. The Raptor tours and movie-site bus sell out weeks ahead on the ranch's own site.

    How high is parasailing in Waikiki?

    About 500 feet on a standard flight, by Hawaiian Parasail's own maximum. Operators advertise 800- and 1,000-foot flights, but those are line lengths, and actual altitude is roughly 60 to 70 percent of the line. It is the most-booked thrill on the island at about $75, 8 to 10 minutes in the air, take-off and landing on the boat.

    How hard is the Koko Head hike?

    Short and brutal: 0.42 miles up 1,048 abandoned railway ties to the 1,208-foot rim of Koko Crater, with a section where the ties cross a gully on open trestle. Thirty to sixty minutes up, no shade, free, no reservation. Go before eight or after four. Stairway to Heaven on the other side of the island is closed and trespassing there is prosecuted.

    Are the shark cage dives safe?

    They have run off Haleiwa for decades without incident to guests: the cage floats at the surface three miles offshore over 150 feet of water, holds six, and the sharks – Galapagos and sandbar, up to 12 feet – circle it rather than touch it. No scuba needed. The original tour is about $87 with 4.9 stars from over 1,700 reviews; the cage-free version (about $146) puts confident swimmers in open water with a guide.

    Which side of the island for what?

    Waikiki for parasailing, surfing and Diamond Head; Hawaii Kai (20 minutes east) for Koko Head and jet skis; the windward coast (45 minutes) for Kualoa and the Kailua kayaks; the North Shore (an hour) for the shark cage, the Keana Farms ziplines and the drop zone. Rent a car or book tours with pickup – the bus reaches Kualoa but not Dillingham.

    What does a thrill day on Oahu cost?

    On GetYourGuide on Sept 25, 2026: the shark cage about $87, parasailing about $75, a Diamond Head shuttle and entry about $64, the Kualoa UTV about $162, the Keana Farms ziplines about $251, a doors-off helicopter about $540. Direct: the skydive from $198 and Koko Head for free.
