Outside that band, you add a rope.
A via ferrata is the one activity here where the weight limit comes from a European standard rather than an operator: since 2017, every lanyard set must absorb a fall by a 40 kg and a 120 kg body. Lighter or heavier climbers are roped as well. This guide explains that rule, lists what the guided routes on our grounds require, and gives the German Alpine Club's 25-year accident analysis – which says the danger is not the steel cable but exhaustion and unclipped falls.

Operators' own limits on 6 grounds
The weight band is the lanyard's. A via ferrata set is a Y-shaped lanyard with a tear-webbing shock absorber. Since EN 958:2017, sets are tested with drop masses of 40 kg and 120 kg (the old norm used 80 kg only), so the brake works for a light teenager and a heavy adult alike. Below 40 kg the absorber does not deploy properly; above 120 kg the forces exceed the test. The German Alpine Club's guidance is therefore simple: under 40 kg or over 120 kg, climb with additional rope protection – children's sets exist for roughly 30–80 kg. Guided operators turn that into their own limits: Loen 40–120 kg, Jackson Hole 88–264 lb with an extra guide outside the band.
Age on guided routes starts at 8 (Squamish) to 12 (Loen, Jackson Hole, Banff), 14 for the long summit routes. Self-guided classics like Mürren (K3) and Cima Capi (A/B) have no gate – only the grade, the season and your own judgement.

Self-guided via ferratas are free beyond the lift – Mürren, Cima Capi. Guided routes cost $55–150 for a half day (Squamish, Norquay, Loen), and $310 per person or $620 per private group at Jackson Hole, where every party gets its own rock guide. Set, helmet and harness are included on guided routes and rented for about €20–30 on the free ones.

How dangerous is it
The German Alpine Club (DAV) has analysed every via ferrata accident reported by its members for 25 years: 778 accidents with 1,056 people involved between 2000 and 2024, and 31 deaths. What killed people is the important part – 73 % of the fatalities were falls, “practically always unprotected”, that is, unclipped or on the approach; 23 % were medical, physical collapse; one was rockfall. The single most common emergency is not a fall at all but a blockage – a climber who can go neither up nor down and needs rescue: 54 % of emergencies against 24 % falls in the DAV's 2020 figures. Put together: on a via ferrata the danger is overreaching – the wrong grade, a late start, a thunderstorm – and the cure is the one thing the equipment cannot do for you, which is to stay clipped in and turn around early. The DAV's own summary of the risk: one emergency in about 50,000 tour days.

Sets are now tested at 40 and 120 kg instead of 80 only; brake length up to 220 cm; under 40 or over 120 kg, the DAV recommends additional rope protection.
What to wear
- Approach shoes or light boots with a stiff sole and grip on rock; trainers are fine on short guided routes, not on Mürren or Cima Capi.
- Gloves – the steel cable shreds bare hands; half-finger via ferrata gloves or cheap work gloves.
- Helmet, harness and EN 958 set are provided by every guided operator; if you rent, check the set is post-2017 and not on a recall list.
- A layer more than the valley, a wind jacket, water and food in a small pack that sits high – routes run above 9,000 ft in Jackson Hole and start at 1,011 m in Loen.
- Nothing dangling. Camera and phone on a leash or in a zipped pocket.

First time
- Both carabiners on the cable, always. At every anchor you move one, then the other – never both at once. That single habit is most of the safety.
- One person between two anchors. If the climber above falls, they fall to the anchor – and onto anyone below it.
- Don't fall. A via ferrata fall generates far higher forces than a climbing fall; the set is a last resort and is retired after one use. Rest on the cable, clip a rest sling, turn back early.
- Start early, watch the sky. A steel cable in a thunderstorm is the one situation the DAV tells you to avoid at the planning stage.
- Pick the grade honestly: A/B (Cima Capi) is exposed walking; K3 (Mürren) needs experience; guided routes in North America grade themselves for beginners.

Guided routes take children from 8 (Squamish) or 12 (Loen, Jackson Hole, Banff's easier routes); the summit routes at Norquay start at 14. On self-guided classics there is no gate, but the DAV recommends rope backup for anyone under 40 kg – and an adult directly behind the child.

Do I need climbing experience?
Not on the guided beginner routes (Squamish, Loen Classic, Banff Explorer, Jackson Hole's Casper Bowl). Mürren's K3 route and exposed Italian classics are for people who have done easier via ferratas first and are comfortable with height.
