From Aberfeldy six miles of wide river, Grade 2, herons on the bank, and then at Grandtully the Tay narrows to thirty metres: 200 metres of Grade 3, the national slalom course, as the finale. All year, except on the fishing days.

Only at Killiecrankie: Highland Fling jumps from a platform under the Garry Bridge, 40 metres above the River Garry, in the Pass of Killiecrankie near Pitlochry. Add tandem, the Highland Swing with a 40-metre drop and the blindfold “blackout”. From £99.64 direct, about €105 on Viator with 588 reviews.
Seven to nine hours return on the Mountain Track from Glen Nevis, 1,300 metres of ascent over about 17 kilometres. The summit is 1,345 metres and has its own weather: snow into June, cloud two days in three, so take a map and compass. Guided groups go Wednesdays and Sundays from May to September.
Anyone with an uplift ticket may ride it; you should be able to: 2.8 kilometres, 555 metres of drop, rock gardens, boardwalk and jumps, graded “Orange Extreme”. The 2010 World Cup record is 4:35.7. For everyone else there are blue and red trails in Leanachan Forest and the gondola to watch from.
The Tay from Aberfeldy is the entry point: six miles of Grade 2 and the Grade 3 Grandtully rapid to finish, ages eight and up, all year except Mondays and Tuesdays, about €71. The Findhorn near Inverness and the Tummel at Pitlochry have more whitewater, the Tummel also by tube.
May to September for the mountain and the zips; the gondola runs all year, the World Cup track May to October. The bungee jumps year-round, in October against the best backdrop. The Tay has most water in spring and autumn. From June to August the Highlands belong to the midges – bring a net and repellent.
