The Zodiac runs into sea caves the ocean has punched into the foot of the cliffs, and above you the rock does not stop. From the helicopter the same from above: waterfalls in the wind, roadless valleys, sixteen miles of it.
Three ways, three prices. The fixed-wing air tour is the most-booked thing on the island (over 1,100 reviews, 4.9) and half the price of the helicopter; the Zodiac is the adrenaline route – hard, wet, into the caves, calm seas only. In winter the boats often do not run: north swell.

The road climbs out of Waimea in switchbacks, and then you stand at the rail and the island suddenly has a hole in it: 3,000 feet deep, ten miles long, striped red and green, a waterfall hanging off the wall like a thread.
Pulse one, but the number belongs here. The canyon is by far the most-searched thing on Kauai, and the view costs only the parking fee at the lookout. The tours here are for anyone without a rental car; if you drive, add the Kalalau Lookout at the end of the road – the view down onto the Nā Pali Coast.

Eight lines over the old sugar-mill lands, each longer than the last: 240 feet to warm up, then 1,100, and at the end the Waita line, half a mile over the reservoir with the Haupu range behind it. Upside down if you ask.

Two miles upstream between trees that lean into the water, then leave the kayak on the bank and wade a mile and a half through rainforest until it opens and a 120-foot waterfall drops into a pool you swim in.
The best-reviewed of the water stops: 4.8 from over 300. No kayaks run on the Wailua on Sundays and permits are limited – book. If you only want to paddle, take the rental; the hike to the falls is muddy and needs shoes that can get wet.

The gentle way to see the cliffs: catamarans from Port Allen with snorkelling, dolphins and, in winter, whales, all day out to the forbidden island of Niihau.

The island's easiest learning beach is right in Lihue; the south around Poipu and Koloa rides well by e-bike.

There is no road, so boat, air or foot. The Zodiac from Port Allen runs into the sea caves and is the adrenaline route, about $225; the fixed-wing air tour is the island's most-booked thing at about $155; the helicopter costs about double. On foot: the first two miles of the Kalalau Trail are open without a permit, the full eleven miles need one. The cliffs rise up to 4,000 feet from the sea by Wikipedia's figure.
