The river that leaves the lake
At Tahoe City the lake spills over a dam and becomes a river: five lazy miles in a rental raft for families. For whitewater, drive to Boca: seven miles of Class III+, boulder gardens, swimming holes, the Floriston gorge to finish.

Before you jump
Why do these grounds count height above the lake?
Because the lake itself sits at 6,225 feet – higher than the exit altitude of some skydives. Counted from sea level every stop would be high; what you feel is the distance to the water: 3,775 feet for the balloon, 2,898 for the Heavenly deck, 1,975 for High Camp, 500 for the parasail, zero on the river.
How does the balloon from a boat work?
Lake Tahoe Balloons inflates the balloon on the deck of the Tahoe Flyer, by its own account the world's only certified balloon launch vessel, and lands back on it. Launch at sunrise from about 6,220 feet, up to 10,000 feet above sea level in good conditions; four hours with the boat ride and a toast, $399 direct, ages six and up, May 9 to October 18.
Can you zipline at Lake Tahoe?
Yes, but almost all of it direct: Heavenly's Blue Streak is the longest on the lake at 3,300 feet, up to 50 mph at over 9,500 feet, reached by the gondola in summer. The Tahoe Treetop parks at Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista and Olympic Valley have 27, 39 and 6 lines in ropes courses, from age six. On Sept 25, 2026 none of them was on GetYourGuide or Viator.
Which rafting at Lake Tahoe?
Two runs on the same river: at Tahoe City, where the lake drains, you float five miles self-guided in a rental raft, Class I, from age two, summer only – that is what most people mean. Whitewater is Boca to Floriston, ten minutes east of Truckee: seven miles of Class III+, three and a half hours, from age seven, about $128.
When is the best time?
July to September: the lake is warmest, the gondolas and ziplines run, so do parasailing and the kayaks, and the balloon flies until mid-October. The Truckee carries the most water in June. Mornings the lake is flat, afternoons the wind comes up. December to April Tahoe is ski resort and snowmobile country.
