And the fall is the risk, not the horse.
A trail ride is the one adventure on these grounds that almost everyone can book – and the one with the strictest weight rule, because a horse can carry only so much. Every ranch publishes its own cap, most between 220 and 240 pounds, and most weigh you at check-in. Ages start at three (on a parent's saddle) or eight (on your own horse). Below: the limits of thirteen operators word for word, the cheapest bookable ride on each ground, and what the emergency-room numbers actually say about a sport that puts you eight feet up on an animal with its own opinions.
Operators' own limits on 13 grounds
The number is about the horse, so it does not move. Twelve of thirteen ranches publish a rider cap and it clusters tightly: 220–240 lb (100–110 kg) – 230 lb at Kualoa, Banff and Chukka, 240 at Sunset Ranch and Heart Six, 220 at Bryce Canyon and Rancho Bonanza, 110 kg in Iceland, Gran Canaria and Mallorca. Two are stricter: Maverick in Austin stops at 185 lb for women and 199 lb for men, and several say plainly that they weigh you at check-in and refund nothing if you are over. There is no talking your way past it; the guide is protecting the horse's back.
Age is looser than anywhere else on Thrillgrounds. Toddlers from three ride on a parent's saddle in Gran Canaria; most ranches put children on their own horse from 6 to 8, Kualoa from 10 with a height minimum of 4 ft 6 in. Under-18s ride with an adult. Nobody asks for experience – every operator here says beginners are welcome – but almost all exclude pregnant riders and anyone with a recent back, neck or joint injury.

A guided trail ride is one of the cheaper hours on these grounds: $25–40 for an hour in Hollywood or Mallorca, $75–130 for one to two hours in the Rockies, Bryce Canyon, Puerto Rico and Iceland, and $150–200 when a cookout dinner is bolted on in Las Vegas or Jackson Hole. Jamaica's ride-and-swim and Cancún's horse-plus-quad combos run $60–140 for a half day. The table lists the cheapest bookable ride on each ground.
Riding has better injury data than any other activity here, and none of it is about guided trail rides in particular – it counts everyone, from four-year-olds in a paddock to eventers. Read it that way. In the United States the emergency rooms logged about 1.84 million horse-related injuries in 1990–2017, roughly 65,000 a year; three quarters of the mounted injuries were a fall or being thrown, and concussion diagnoses more than tripled over the period as doctors started looking for them. The older CDC count found 205 riding deaths in 27 states over twelve years, more than 60 % of them head injuries – which is the whole argument for the helmet every ranch on this list hands you. Germany counts 30,000 to 93,000 horse accidents a year, half the hospital cases under 18. On a walking-pace trail ride with a school horse the exposure is short and the horse is chosen for you; the risk that remains is the fall, and the helmet is what changes its outcome.

Head injuries were associated with more than 60 % of them. The same report counted 92,763 ER visits for riding injuries in 1987–88 and judged the serious-injury rate per riding hour higher than for motorcyclists.

Over half of the patients hospitalised after a riding accident are under 18; girls under 14 are 18 % of organised riders but 40 % of the accidents. Of injured children, 52.6 % hurt arms and hands, 18.4 % the head.

On your own horse usually 6 to 8, at Kualoa Ranch 10 with a minimum height of 4 ft 6 in; children from 3 can share an adult's saddle at El Salobre on Gran Canaria, and Ranxo Ses Roques on Mallorca takes all ages. Under-18s ride with an adult everywhere. There is no upper age limit, though Mill Iron Ranch in Jackson Hole publishes 7–70.

It has real numbers: about 65,000 emergency-room visits a year in the United States over 1990–2017, three quarters of the mounted injuries a fall or being thrown, and more than 60 % of riding deaths in the CDC's count were head injuries. Those figures cover all riders, not guided trail rides at a walk. The practical answer is: wear the helmet the ranch gives you, keep your distance from the horse in front, and tell the guide if you have never ridden.
No. Every operator on this list says beginners are welcome and gives a short lesson before the ride. Rides go at a walk in single file behind the guide; faster groups exist only where the operator offers them.
Most ranches say no – Sunset Ranch, Kualoa and Chukka exclude pregnant riders explicitly – and most also exclude recent back, neck, hip or knee injuries. Ask before you book rather than at the gate.
Long trousers, closed shoes with a small heel, layers rather than a loose jacket, and the helmet. Swimwear underneath for the rides that end in the water (Jamaica, Cancún). Iceland provides rainwear and boots.
